SARS Scam Alert: Don't Be Fooled by Fake Tax Refund Emails

Fraudsters are increasingly using sophisticated phishing scams to impersonate SARS and trick taxpayers into revealing sensitive personal and banking information.

These scams often arrive as emails claiming that you qualify for a tax refund or that SARS requires additional information to process your tax affairs. The email may look legitimate and can even appear to come from addresses such as returns@sars.co.za or refunds@sars.co.za.

However, these emails are often spoofed and designed to steal your information.

How the Scam Works

The fraudster sends an email that appears to come from SARS and encourages you to click a link, open an attachment or complete a form.

You are then directed to a fake website that closely resembles the SARS eFiling platform. Once you enter your banking details, login credentials or other personal information, criminals can use that information to commit fraud.

What SARS Will Never Do

SARS has repeatedly warned taxpayers that it will never:

• Request your banking details via email, SMS or post• Ask for your credit or debit card details• Request your eFiling password, PIN or login credentials• Send hyperlinks to banking websites• Send .htm or .html attachments

If you receive a communication containing any of these requests, treat it as suspicious.

Protect Yourself

Before responding to any SARS-related communication:

✔️ Do not click on links contained in emails or SMSs

✔️ Do not provide personal or banking information via email

✔️ Access SARS services directly through the official eFiling website

✔️ Verify any suspicious communication with SARS or your registered tax practitioner

✔️ Report phishing attempts immediately
